Candy, a good-hearted Chicago cop, has all but given up hope of finding a mate until he meets Ally Sheedy, a mortician’s shy daughter who lives as sheltered a life as he does. “Only the Lonely” - 3 stars: Old-fashioned love story with touches of John Candy comedy. Take the children - especially the very young ones. It has fluidity that most animated features do not. “101 Dalmations” - 4 stars: Excellent cartooning that is pre-’60s sweet. With Danny Aiello, James Coburn, Andie MacDowell and Sandra Bernhard, who is relentlessly repulsive. “Hudson Hawk” - 1 star: Filled with car crashes and falling bodies, hysterical Italians and ugly Americans, this beyond-bad Bond-burlesque caper comedy stars Bruce Willis as a Hoboken cat burglar just out of Sing Sing who’s set on the trail of three Da Vinci treasures. Laid-back special-effects expert Bryan Brown and gruff ex-cop Brian Dennehy are still engaging to watch but this sequel is downright boring. “FX 2 - The Deadly Art of Illusion” - 2 stars: Film concentrates on special effects at the expense of developing characters and dialogue. Director Joel Schumacher turns the story into solid, convincing entertainment. “Dying Young” - 3 stars: Julia Roberts and Campbell Scott, who is terminally ill, fall in love in this modern-dress version of high Gothic romance. The road movie for the most part is entertaining and enlightening. “Dutch” - 2 stars: John Hughes looks at class distinctions through Ed O’Neill (Al Bundy of “Married … With Children”), a successful blue-collar businessman JoBeth Williams, his upper-class girlfriend, and Ethan Randall, Williams’ snotty son. Winner of seven Oscars: picture, director, adapted screenplay, film editing, cinematography, original score and sound.
