Reddit is hijacking content by requiring it to be hosted on it's own CDN. I will concede that objectively speaking, "new Reddit" is an abject failure (and the fact that continues to exist is a testament to the such) and that it's much more heavily astroturfed by major corporations now. Basically, reddit is just as bad today as it was a decade ago.īut I'm sure for people who had their first internet-social experiences on reddit, they remember it a lot more fondly. 2008-ish?, everyone in the online communities I knew thought it was filled with awful pseudointellectual teenagers and college students, that the upvote/downvote system was horrible and encouraged people to post low-effort content, the moderators were overzealous and clueless, and in general there was no sense of community due to the size of the site + lack of individual identifiers beyond usernames, like avatars and signatures from a typical internet forum of the day. Pretty much since the day I found out about reddit in. That sort of thing is always quickly overrun by bad people.As someone who was involved with many internet communities long before reddit, it sounds like the author is just experiencing the eternal September. If you have a local church or community center you could call, they may have something going on privately that you could request admission to. There are lots of social media options for the type of content you're looking for - they just don't routinely include video chat. Even now, you still see people publicly post meeting IDs and passwords, inviting jackasses to raid them. This wasn't a rare thing, it was constant. They would play obscene videos, scream racists threats and so on. I say that because you sound like a nice person, but before zoom meeting security was enhanced, meetings were frequently harassed by "zoom bombers," online trolls who looked for online meetings to raid and disrupt. If there were public zoom meetups, you wouldn't like them.
Managing attendance and controlling access are paramount. For example, offices can hold remote conferences, or schools can patch students in from home. It's for structured meetings and designed for security, not openness. No, this isn't how zoom works, I'm afraid.
